Andrew Balbirnie steps down as Ireland captain

Andrew Balbirnie has stepped down as the captain of the Ireland Men’s cricket team after the side’s failure to qualify for the ODI World Cup 2023. Cricket Ireland (CI) made the announcement on Tuesday, July 4. Ireland were unable to progress to the Super Sixes stage of the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe, managing only one victory in their four group matches.

Balbirnie took over as captain in 2019 and led Ireland in a total of 89 matches across all formats, including four Tests, 33 ODIs, and 52 T20Is. In his final match as captain, the 32-year-old guided Ireland to a thrilling two-wicket win over Nepal before informing his teammates of his decision to step down.

In a statement regarding his decision, Balbirnie expressed his gratitude for the support he received during his tenure and stated that he believed it was the right time for both himself and the team. He also pledged to continue giving his best for the team and contribute to their future success.

“After much thought and consideration, I have made the decision to step down as ODI and T20I captain. It has been one of my great honours to lead this team over the last few years and I am hugely grateful for all the support I received on and off the pitch from the many players, coaches, Cricket Ireland and supporters of the Ireland team,” said Balbirnie as quoted by ICC.

“I feel this is the right time for me, but more importantly the team. I will continue to do my best for this team and work hard to contribute towards what I hope will be a successful period over the next number of years. Thank you,” he added.

Following Balbirnie’s resignation, veteran batter Paul Stirling has been appointed as the interim captain. Stirling has previously served as captain on 13 occasions and will lead the team until a permanent captain is selected.

The process of choosing a permanent captain involves the national selector and head coach, along with the High-Performance Director, making recommendations for each format. The final appointments will be made by the Chair and CEO of Ireland Cricket.
